Start in the field.Deliver to the field.
Four Themes Where Interests Meet Practice
-
Plants & Food Production
I study how plants grow and respond to their environment, from physiological processes to molecular mechanisms. I move between fundamental questions about individual responses and the complex phenomena that emerge in fields and growing environments. From there, I seek to connect biological understanding with food production under changing climates and growing conditions.
-
AI in the Physical World
I use measurement and data to interpret phenomena in the field. Rather than keeping AI and information technology on the screen, I use them to read conditions and changes in the physical world and support prediction and decision-making. I consider systems in which action by people and machines leads to further learning and improvement.
-
Regional & Global Challenges
I move between everyday life, institutions, the voices of those involved, and data to uncover challenges that may not yet be visible. By understanding the distinct character of each region while looking toward challenges shared around the world, I seek practical responses through the exchange of knowledge across regions and borders.
-
Science in Society
I consider how research and technology can be accepted, used, and sustained in society. This means looking beyond my own specialism to the institutions, economics, values, and collaboration that shape implementation, as well as the people affected by it. I seek ways to share knowledge with society and create a path toward responsible practice.
Bringing methods together for practice.
I select the knowledge and methods needed for the challenge at hand, then define the role of each and design how the work will proceed. Through practice and evaluation, what I learn informs the next decision.
-
Define the challenge
Observe the field and clarify the challenge to address and the change to pursue.
-
Design the approach
Select the necessary knowledge and methods, then define their roles and how the work should proceed.
-
Act, evaluate, and refine
Put the approach into practice, evaluate it in the field, and carry what is learned into the next decision.
